Climate and seasons in Tanzania
Are you about to book a fantastic holiday in Tanzania between safaris and paradisiacal beaches? Stop: first you must understand if the dates that you’ve chosen are the best ones.
The territory is located not far from the equator and boasts a tropical climate. This means that the temperatures are lower than the average in the area and also the humidity remains lower than in other places.
Speaking of seasons, there aren’t 4 moments as in Europe, but we’re talking about a green season and a dry one. The first lasts from mid-November to mid-May, while the second one goes from mid-May to mid-November. These periods can change by about 15 days forward or backward, depending on the year, as for the rest of the world the change of season is not always the same.
The rainfall pattern is also to be taken into consideration, the experts tend to divide the country into 4 different areas: the one in the North and East (leaving out Lake Victoria) has two rainy seasons, one shorter between October and December, and one more intense from March to May.
In the North-West area, on the other hand, these two seasons merge and last continuously from October to May. In the Central South area, the rainy season is just one and goes from December to April in the South East area, and from November to April in the West area.
The best times to visit Tanzania
In light of the rainy period and the seasons explained not long ago, you will surely have clearer ideas, but if you’re still wondering about what are the best times to visit Tanzania, we’re ready to reveal them to you.
When to go to Tanzania? Surely the best solution is to book in the July-August period, when the temperatures are cooler and more acceptable but the climate is still sunny and not excessively rainy.
Interesting is also the month of June, especially in the North.East area and on the Pemba island. Equally favorable, and economically convenient, is September but it’s important to carefully select the areas to visit. October is a transition month, in some northern areas the rainy season is already beginning but, with a little organization, it could be avoided to be excluded immediately.
As for the Italian winter months, December, January and February, they can be excellent for traveling by carefully selecting the right traveling areas. Those who love the wildest nature should visit the park area in the period from May to October, without excluding June and July, both really appreciated for the migration of wildebeest and zebras in the Serengeti area. Those looking for a beach holiday should know that the best times are July, August and September thanks to the dry climate and the appreciable temperatures. The beaches however are absolutely livable even in January and February, when the temperatures get higher.
We must also specify that it would be better to decide the period based on the area:
- Arusha and Tarangire are ideal in December, January, February, July and August
- Serengeti and Ngorongoro are perfect between December and February
- Lake Natron and Lake Victoria are recommended from June to September
- Trekking on Kilimanjaro is instead recommended between December and February
