Zanzibar, Tanzania

Tanzania is not only known for its many safaris and nature parks, but also for its paradisiacal beaches and some islands that become tourist destinations, among which the Zanzibar archipelago stands out. Among the most popular tourist destinations of all time there is Zanzibar, a place that is located on the Unguja island even if now everyone calls it “Zanzibar Island”.
In the northern part of the coast of Tanzania there’s Zanzibar; the destination, appreciated for its unique landscapes, can be easily reached from Italy thanks to the numerous daily flights that connect the cities. With flights ranging from 10 to 14 hours you can spend your holidays in a dream destination.

When to visit Zanzibar

Are you wondering about what is the best time for a holiday in Zanzibar? Surely you should know that here the climate is tropical, this means that all year the temperatures fluctuate between 30 and 38 degrees. As for the best time, we must suggest what goes from June to October but also the time in between January and February is not bad, but there is to keep in mind that the climate is more sultry.
Absolutely to avoid instead the rainy seasons that coincide with the period from March to May and from November to December.

What to see in Zanzibar

In addition to the beaches and the sea, Zanzibar offers a lot of cultural and historical entertainment, giving tourists the opportunity to visit many points of interest just 20 kilometers from the coast of Tanzania. Below we list some key points not to be missed.

Stone Town

We know that many are attracted by Zanzibar for the landscapes and islands but we recommend first of all to visit the city; to which you must dedicate at least a day to notice the incredible architecture in Arabic style including the Fort and the Palace of Wonders. Also, for fans, you can see the birthplace of Freddie Mercury. Walking through the city, you can see the customs and traditions up close and immerse yourself in the markets and the life of the locals.

Butterfly Center

A real wonder: the Butterfly Center is a center entirely dedicated to butterflies; these charming colorful creatures can be seen up close in a place that allows them to be born and grow.

Jozani Forest and Masingini Forest

The National Park of Jozani is a forest to visit; nature lovers will be delighted by the opportunity to see up close several species including the Red Colobus, typical monkeys of the area. In this case, to visit the area safely, it is recommended to rely on organized and professional tours.

Alternatively you can visit the Masenghini Forest, less distant than the previous one but still rich in red monkeys, baboons and other animal species immersed in a lush flora.

Sanctuary of the Turtles

They call it Changuu Island, but many have nicknamed it Prison Island for its past; if in the past the island was used as a place of detention for slaves, today it hosts a colony of 100-year-old turtles. The oldest but still walking around the area has turned 196 years old! Reachable by ferry from Zanzibar, it is definitely one of the activities not to be missed.

Darajani Market

Whatever the trip, entering a stop in a local market is always a great idea. Here we recommend the Darajani Market, located in the center of the city of Zanzibar, where in addition to being able to buy souvenirs and typical handicrafts, you can take evocative and colorful souvenir photos. Our advice? Organize a gastronomic tour to discover the street food of Zanzibar.

The islands near Zanzibar

From Zanzibar you can also visit other small islands; an example is Tumbatu, semidesert but an authentic paradise, or Chumbe that is home to the depths rich in tropical fish so much to be a paradise for snorkeling and diving. Last but not least, Mnemba, one of the most exclusive luxury resorts is located here, so much so that the island is reserved but you can practice snorkeling.

The most beautiful beaches of Zanzibar

What are the most beautiful beaches in Zanzibar? We start from Nungwi, an expanse of white sand and emerald water, but it is not less Nakupenda that stands out for the phenomenon of the tides.

Those looking for comfort and relaxation should instead choose Kendwa, a beach full of services and located right near resorts, hotels and luxury facilities. From here, on foot at low tide, you can reach Nungwi.

Among the most famous of Zanzibar is Kiwengwa, with very clear sand and an enchanting sea. It is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful beaches of Zanzibar even if, in high season, it is very popular.
